Born 1908: Michael Maltese, screenwriter for hundreds of cartoons, most notably during the golden age of the Warner Bros. animation department, where he often teamed with director Chuck Jones. Among Maltese's classics: "Duck Amuck" (1953), "Duck Dodgers in the 24½ Century" (1953), and "One Froggy Evening" (1955). Died 1981.

Born 1931: Rip Torn, respected dramatic actor, took a major plunge into comedy as Arthur, the manipulative producer of "The Larry Sanders Show" (1992-98).

1936: "Ants in the Pantry" opened in theatres. In this comedy short, The Three Stooges plant insects at a society party, then get themselves hired as exterminators to rid the mansion of pests.

Born 1939: Mike Farrell, actor, Capt. B.J. Hunnicut, MD on TV's "M*A*S*H" (1975-83).

Born 1957: Kathy Najimy, actress, "Sister Act" (1992), "Veronica's Closet" (1997-2000), and the voice of Peggy on "King of the Hill" (1997-).
